*3 Part-time positions Salary:  $16.65 - $19.57 per hour
Reports to:  Community Services Manager
Supervises:  Not a Supervisory position.

Summary: Under general supervision, the Tutor will conduct tutoring sessions with the Ak-Chin Indian Community students in K-12 grades in various school subjects as part of the After-School Tutoring Program. This position is also responsible for assisting students in using computers in the computer lab, serve as a mentor and may be expected to drive students to their program site and home. This is a non-exempt position.

Minimum Qualifications: Experience equivalent to two (2) years of full-time tutoring, teaching, counseling or closely related work with children; OR a Bachelorís degree in Education or a closely related field. Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driverís license and be able to meet the Communityís insurance carrier requirements. Must complete and pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:A Bachelorís Degree in Elementary Education or Education.

Hiring Preference: The Community affords Indian Preference and Veterans' preference. In applying Indian Preference, preference will be given to qualified Community members, then to qualified Native Americans, and then other qualified candidates. Except as otherwise stated herein, all candidates will receive consideration without regard to race, color, sex, age, disability, religion, national origin, or other non-merit factor. Applicants wishing to claim Indian Preference must submit a Certificate of Indian Blood or proof of tribal enrollment at the time of application. All applicants wishing to claim Veterans' Preference must submit a copy of a certified Department of Defense DD Form 214 "Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty."

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assists students in Grades K-4 with homework in various subjects, including, basic grammar, reading composition, English, General Math (some Algebra) and Social Studies in individual and small-group sessions.
  2. Assists students in Grades 5-12 with school projects and writing assignments.
  3. Assists students in using computers in the computer lab
  4. Serves as a mentor to the students.
  5. Assists in the administration of the academic curriculum for after school students.
  6. Assists in the preparation and assessment of Ak-Chinís students and follows protocol for the applicable teaching method pertaining to assessment.
  7. Drives students to the program site and home.
  8. Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of a variety of basic educational subjects, including reading and mathematics.
  • Knowledge and skill in student assessments, application of curriculum in accordance with student level and skills.
  • Knowledge and skill with children who have learning disabilities, IEPís and ability to identify student learning styles.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, parents, and employees in the Community.
  • Skill in assisting students with understanding/learning a variety of basic educational subjects, including reading and mathematics.
  • Skill in assisting students in learning effective study habits and appropriate attitudes toward education.
  • Skill in assisting students and employees in basic computer operations.
  • Skill in establishing and maintain effective working relationship with school age as well as parents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to motivate students and keep tutoring interest levels high.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding the school age students and their families at all times.
  • Ability to utilize personal computers and related software (including but not limited to Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
