Job Title:  Motor Pool Technician
Salary:  $14.99 - $17.61 per hour ($31,172 - $36, 627 per annum)
Reports to:  Maintenance Manager
Supervises:  Not a Supervisory position.

Summary: Under general supervision, the Motor Pool Technician performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work by assisting the Lead Mechanic in the maintenance and repair of varied automotive equipment, repairs and replaces tires, ordering parts and supplies, general clean up and equipment. This position is a non-exempt position.

Minimum Qualifications: Must possess a high school diploma or GED and experience equivalent to one (1) year of experience in vehicle and equipment servicing and maintenance. Must possess a Arizona Drivers License and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements (please see list on website or attached to the application). Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Must complete and pass a background check.

Hiring Preference: The Community affords Indian Preference and Veterans' preference. In applying Indian Preference, preference will be given to qualified Community members, then to qualified Native Americans, and then other qualified candidates. Except as otherwise stated herein, all candidates will receive consideration without regard to race, color, sex, age, disability, religion, national origin, or other non-merit factor. Applicants wishing to claim Indian Preference must submit a Certificate of Indian Blood or proof of tribal enrollment at the time of application. All applicants wishing to claim Veterans' Preference must submit a copy of a certified Department of Defense DD Form 214 "Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty."

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assists with various manual labor tasks in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
  2. Repairs vehicles and small equipment; assists with other repairs as assigned.
  3. Performs a variety of maintenance and preventative maintenance on machines, pumps and generators.
  4. Replaces and repairs wheels, tires and tubes; rotates tires in accordance to departmental procedures.
  5. Checks lubrication and fluid levels, and fills and replaces fluid as needed, inspects and services batteries, cleans equipment and mechanical parts and assists Lead Mechanic with complex tasks and large assignments.
  6. General clean up, sweeping, mopping and maintains shop, yard, trash disposal, put away tools and wiping down of equipment.
  7. Responsible for cleaning up spills and unsafe conditions in a timely manner, and disposes of hazardous chemicals in accordance with departmental procedures.
  8. Assists with inventory; purchases, picks up and delivers parts, equipment and supplies; performs roadside assistance tasks as directed.
  9. Maintains records of work status and services performed.
  10. Follows all safety rules and regulations, and closely follows verbal and written instructions; reports hazards, equipment problems, repair needs, security issues and emergency situations.
  11. Learns a variety of general maintenance work processes including the operations and maintenance of specialized tools and equipment.
  12. Establishes and maintains effective working relationship Ak-Chin employees, supervisor, management and the Ak-Chin Community members.
  13. Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of the methods, tools and materials used in the repair of vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precaution in a shop environment.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate service records.
  • Skills in performing basic inspections and diagnostic tests on vehicles and equipment.
  • Skills in use and care of tools and equipment.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other Community employees and the public.
  • Skill in following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions and procedures.
  • Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Must be willing to expand knowledge in the automotive field through education and on the job training to include but not limited to changing and starting fuel delivery, brakes, air conditioning, lighting and computer and steering systems.
  • Must be able to follow written directions and be able to document repairs in legible writing.
