Job Title:  Lifeguards
Salary:  $10.03 per hour
Reports to:  Parks & Recreation Director
Supervises:  Not a Supervisory position

Summary: Under general supervision, ensures the health, safety, and welfare of those using the Ak-Chin Indian Community Parks and Recreation swimming pool facilities by preventing and responding to emergencies. This position is a seasonal part-time position and is non-exempt. Season is from late May to early September.

Minimum Qualifications: Must possess an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification, American Red Cross CPR and First Aid Certification. Must be 16 years of age or older.

Hiring Preference: The Community affords Indian Preference and Veterans' preference. In applying Indian Preference, preference will be given to qualified Community members, then to qualified Native Americans, and then other qualified candidates. Except as otherwise stated herein, all candidates will receive consideration without regard to race, color, sex, age, disability, religion, national origin, or other non-merit factor. Applicants wishing to claim Indian Preference must submit a Certificate of Indian Blood or proof of tribal enrollment at the time of application. All applicants wishing to claim Veterans' Preference must submit a copy of a certified Department of Defense DD Form 214 "Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty."

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility to ensure they adhere to swimming pool rules and to ensure the prevention of accidents; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  2. Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  3. Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service.
  4. Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
  5. Prepares and maintains appropriate activity reports.
  6. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
  • Skill in the application of lifeguard surveillance and rescue techniques.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with volunteers, other staff, and the public.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with upper management, vendors, tribal employees/members, co-workers, and the general public.
