Job Title:  Groundskeeper
Salary:  $11.65 - $13.69 per hour
Reports to:  Public Works Supervisor
Supervises:  Not a Supervisory position.

Summary: Under general supervision, performs a variety of strenuous unskilled or semi-skilled work to maintain Community buildings and grounds. This is a non-exempt position.

Minimum Qualifications: Experience equivalent to six months full time general grounds maintenance or closely related work. Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements (see list on website or attached to application.) Must be able to successfully complete a background check.

Hiring Preference: The Community affords Indian Preference and Veterans' preference. In applying Indian Preference, preference will be given to qualified Community members, then to qualified Native Americans, and then other qualified candidates. Except as otherwise stated herein, all candidates will receive consideration without regard to race, color, sex, age, disability, religion, national origin, or other non-merit factor. Applicants wishing to claim Indian Preference must submit a Certificate of Indian Blood or proof of tribal enrollment at the time of application. All applicants wishing to claim Veterans' Preference must submit a copy of a certified Department of Defense DD Form 214 "Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty."

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Mows grass, trims plants/shrubs, and prunes bushes and trees, including operating equipment such as riding lawn mowers, tractor gang mowers, weed-eaters, chain saws, and trucks.
  2. Maintains gravesites and the landscape of cemetery grounds.
  3. Assists with the preparation of burial sites.
  4. Performs minor maintenance and repairs to equipment.
  5. Performs a variety of strenuous manual labor associated with landscape installation/maintenance and picking up/hauling trash, debris, and other waste.
  6. Assists at special events by setting up equipment, tables and chairs, helping clean up, etc.
  7. Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of the addresses/locations of residences, businesses, and government facilities in the Ak-Chin Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of the practices and techniques of landscape/grounds maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of landscape/grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of general grounds keeping and landscaping principles and practices.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
  • Skill in operating a variety of landscape/grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Skill in understanding and following written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
